A mailing address, postal code or familiar community name can cross a municipal boundary. Thornhill, for example, spans Vaughan and Markham. The lookup checks the point you choose against Ontario’s actual boundary polygons. It does not use the address finder’s county label.

Municipal government and geographic areas are different. Guelph is a single-tier city, while Ontario’s municipal directory places it in the Wellington geographic area. Where the upper-tier polygon excludes a separate city, we use the directory’s geographic association and identify that source in the result.

The map also checks Ontario’s First Nation reserve boundaries. We show the reserve or district found, but do not assign it to a neighbouring municipality. If the sources do not establish every part of box 40, confirm the remaining wording with the First Nation or licence issuer.

Map boundaries and address locations have limited precision. If the selected point is within about 100 metres of a mapped edge, or records conflict, the tool asks for a closer check and does not offer a completed reference to copy. This margin is a precaution, not a guarantee of survey accuracy.
